Greetings,

The event is closing upon us.  For this event, we'll be using a special 1x1 call sign (N6C).  I'll be at the shack no later than 0900 Pacific Time, so we can check into the W5CGC weekly amateur radio net as W2AIR/6.  After that, we'll shift gears and start the event. The event technically kicks off at 1400Z/UTC/GMT, which is 0700 local time.  However, I don't plan on opening the shack until about 0830 or so.  The event goes until 2300Z/UTC/GMT.

Please feel free to swing by and watch or even better participate!

Best regards,

Eric Simmons, KB6YNO, Club President

Greeting all!

It's been quite some time since I've posted anything to the web site.  This has mostly been due to the fact that the shack was without power.  With the help of PACAREA/PAC-6 we were able to secure funding to get power rerun to the shack.  It is now open for business.

We are in the midst of working with MWR again to get our club recognized.  More on that as news develops.  In the meantime, if there is an on-air event that you think we should participate in, please let me know.  The next event scheduled is the USCG Auxiliary on-air birthday celebration on Oct 22nd, which oddly enough is NOT the actual birthday of the USCG Auxiliary.  We will be on the air using voice and possibly data (mode TBD).  If you would like to participate, please let me know.

Until then we'll hear you on the radio.

By now most of you know that The Coast Guard Island Amateur Radio Club is up and running strong with contacts made around the world and participation in the Coast Guard net with Dick at W5CGC on 14.300

I am serving as your club treasurer and want to ensure that everyone has visibility on what we are spending and where we are at with our account.

The Club officers agreed and wrote in the club bylaws that annual dues of $20.00 are appropriate.

I have collected $120 from 6 members, dispersed $88.00 for a PO Box and received donations of $8.00.  This brings the club balance to $40.00.

I am collecting dues from all members and will be posting a log to help everyone know where they are at with their dues.  We will have dues run on the calendar year from January to January but would appreciate your commitment to the club early on to help get the club running at 100%.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the financial status of the club or to pay dues.

Thanks for all of your assistance,

Brenden Kettner

2010 Club Dues Drive PDF Print E-mail

Good day, all!

The new year is here and I want to put a call out to all members about paying dues for the year.

The annual dues are $20.00 and can be paid to Brenden Kettner, our illustrious treasurer.  The dues help pay for repairing current equipment or purchasing new items.  Most importantly, it helps pay for outgoing QSL cards.  Postage isn't cheap... well, sort of.  However, we are receiving more and more QSL cards, and it is customary to send one back.  Paying dues will also get you the combination to the shack.  No dues, no combo.  It's an incentive of sorts...

The station has been performing well, but sadly we don't have many members coming by to operate.  Currently we have HF and VHF available.  As we get time to identify cables on the tower, we will have more frequencies to play with.  That is pretty much why we haven't hooked up the rest of the radio gear.  I plan on bringing in a KAM+ multimode controller, so we can do digital modes.  I will also be bringing in (when I finally remember) an 80M dipole, so we can get on lower frequencies and have some more antenna options.  More to follow.

That's it for now.  Swing by the shack at lunch time or find us in the galley on Friday's @ 1130.

Eric, KB6YNO, club president.

Memories of W2AIR PDF Print E-mail

What do I remember about W2AIR... Hmm....

It all began in Boot Camp at Alameda in 1970. I scored very well on the Morse Code apptitude test (I had been a Boy Scout) and requested RM school. "No openings!" So, after graduation with Oscar Company (Tuba player), off I went to the mighty USCGC Tanager as a deck ape. Striking BM while aboard so I could get off and get to a small boat station - HAH! Called in by the XO and told I was going to strike QM instead as I was pretty good with charts and navigation. So, I immediately put in for ASM school. Accepted, flight physical, etc... until a budget cut eliminated my slot at school. RM school instead.

Since I was coming from the field and had absolutely no desire to ever go back to chipping paint on a "big white one" I was ecstatic to be a student at RM school at Governor's Island. Assigned a room, complete with a roomie - Dennis Brooks. Dennis would disappear in the evening and I had no idea where he was going. One night I had the 'fire watch" at the school and Dennis walked in and went upstairs. I followed him and he unlocked the door to W2AIR. Fired up the Collins "S" line and started working stations in Europe!!! I didn't know he was N3BRY until that evening.

So, instead of going to the EM club like everyone else (most of them flunked out), we would go to W2AIR and work CW on the ham bands! That got me through the dreaded CW portion of the school - which eventually lead to being stationed at NMC (Point Reyes), meeting my wife, etc. All because of my "roomie." Many a wonderful evening spent at W2AIR!!!
